GERRY - Hundreds of ,flower girl dressprom dresses are waiting to be given away Sunday at Gerry United Methodist Church.
All they need are young girls from around the area who want to take them.
The Cassadaga Valley Central School Key Club will host ''Project Prom Dress'' at the church Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m., during which girls preparing for proms across the region are invited to stop in and pick out prom dresses free of charge. More than 250 had already been collected for the event as of Thursday afternoon, reported Cathy Smith, Key Club co-adviser.
In addition to dresses that have been donated for the event by local residents, more than 100 dresses came from JFK High School in Buffalo after news of the project spread, Mrs. Smith said. Kayla Franchina, a CVCS senior who originally had the idea to start the project, traveled to Buffalo with teacher Tina Richir to pick the dresses up and add them to the collection.
''They had done (a similar project) at their school,'' Mrs. Smith said of the school that donated the dresses to the CVCS project. ''And someone from Eden Central School is doing an event (today) and Saturday ... and told me to come the last day to take (leftover dresses).''
Mrs. Smith said the main concern of the Key Club is that a large number of the dresses that have been collected for the project are given away on Sunday. She said it is the club's hope that girls from schools throughout the area come to the event Sunday and leave with a dress for the prom.
In addition, she said, a ''prom package'' will be given away during the event that will include hair styling, nails and other expenses. The Cassadaga Valley Key Club will offer refreshments during the afternoon as well, Mrs. Smith said.
Anyone who is still interested in donating dresses or other prom paraphernalia to the event is also welcome to stop by the church during the afternoon and drop the items off,Bridesmaid Dresses, she said.
Local businesses have also stepped up to add to the spirit of the event, Mrs. Smith added. Anderson Cleaners will be giving away gift certificates for dry-cleaning discounts along with each dress that is taken during the event, she said, and Penny's Less Family Salon has offered to give away certificates for free up-dos to girls as well
